Why does my hair break when I get highlights?

Everytime I go to the salon and get highlights my hair starts to break. I'm African-American. Is my hair not strong enough for highlights? It's not think but its not thin. It's medium texture but should I just stop getting highlights and wear my natural color?

All of those chemicals they use to dye your hair completely dry your hair out, which is why it breaks easily, not sure if it is worsened because of your race or not and the fact your hair has a different texture than caucasians but it's still because it dries it out, maybe if you could some deep conditioners and left them in for longer periods of time it would help.. worth a shot, maybe you could ask your stylist. Is your hair stylist giving you deep conditioning treatments after bleaching? This can help with the strength of the hair. Also, do not comb or brush your hair when its wet. This will cause it to break. Also make sure youre getting a trim every time you get it bleached. You need all those split ends off!

I bleach my hair every 6 weeks and yes, it breaks off... its bleach! Its not good for your hair! Im thinking of going back to natural too....

Its really a question you have to answer yourself. How much do you like the color you get when bleaching? Is it worth losing some hair? It was worth it for me for years but now that I want long, thick hair I have to stop bleaching it :(

I get my hair highlighted all the time but my beautician tells me when you get highlight you can't relax or perm your hair within two weeks and you can't put alot of heat on the hair for the highlights weaken the hair and not as strong as no highlighted hair
