Which style is more attractive on African American women?

I've been having hair drama for the last 6 months. So much so that I had to whack it all off and start over again. Bad relaxer, bad hair color, too many chemicals. Now I've got about two inches of hair that's starting to get thick and curly...tight curls as in small afro. I had chin length relaxed hair but am now considering going and staying natural. I notice that on television commercials the majority of actresses have natural tresses but in movies I see the opposite relaxed look. I've been hiding under a wig for about 2 weeks now and I envy people who can just get up out of bed and just go with no worries. I know that men love longer hair, my husband is one of them but I wonder if society thinks it's better to wear the hair naturally? In my case it is very thick and without relaxer very curly. I need real answers because once I go back to a relaxer there is no turning back so I want to make my decision with sound advice on style. Any links would be nice. I am a teacher

Natural hair is becoming something of a fad right now. If you do stay natural you have to realize that its a commitment especially if you want it long. you have to learn how to deal with your hair all over again. Mainstream america prefers relaxed hair still but you will meet people that likes the natural look as well. I personally love my natural hair but it does get exhausting between the smug looks and snobby comments but i wouldn't change it for anybody. Check out:

i think you should grow it out some and instead of gettig something that will make your hair permantly straight just use a flat iron when you want it staright again. Think about it. if you get a perm ,what if you decide to wear it natural again?? you will have to cut it off again. a flat iron will be easier because you can switch up your styles easily. You can have it natural one day and straighten the next day

hope this helps!!!!

I love the glossy, spirally look on African-American women. I also love braids. I also think Afro can be super stylish...depending on your face-Shape, personal style..whathaveyou.. One of my good friends is African-American and she wears lots of wigs...All of them CUTE!! But, then again, I also agree that men prefer long, natural hair. I don't know a whole lot about you, however, I will give my best attempt at an answer... Don't do the relaxer. Don't do anything fake. Go Au Natural... If you hate it, you can change it later...But you won't hate it and neither will your husband.

Currently i have long hair and have been learning alot so...

i do not have a relaxer i stopped getting them 5 years ago ( and i've only have 3 relaxers in my life time so this is all natural) so i can show you how to take care of hair with or without a relaxer.

1. The shampoo, unfortunately many black women are using shampoos with alcohol and petroleum jelly. step away from them. Use Aveda's shampoo.. specifically the name is Brilliant...go to the website. I use it, i love it, it mouisterizes my hair and the products are natural. i have also heard that KeraCare is good.

2. Okay, step two condition it and then it is time to comb it out, Do not use a brush on you hair when it is wet,,it will hate you for it then break off in revenge. Put your your sections use a big tooth comb, to untangle it

3. Do a hot oil treatment atleast once a month with extra virgin olive oil...repeat..EXTRA VIRGIN olive oil..not the regular stuff. unfortunately i have yet to take this step however my hair is doing great.

4. Okay on the daily basis you need to pay close attention to your hair...i recommend conditioning your scalp(3-4 times a week) and your ends(everyday) so that they will not get dry and unhealthy Petroleum jellly and mineral oil are weapons of mass destruction ( in other words do not use grease) it does so much harm to your hair it cannot be all explained here. So you ask what do I use...well natural oils grapeseed oil(it defects heat so good for those who use flat irons like me)

jojoba oi, extra virgin olive oil, sesame oil, emu oil, coconut oil...all these natural oils and more love you..i promise.

I also use Aveda's Brilliant ( the name of the brand) emollient for my ends.

5. Next,,if you want your hair straight but still be natural it is time to get a freakin good flat iron.,i have the Chi..it does the job but I recommend getting the Sedu because of the good reviews. make sure to protect your hair..i have so thermal protector from Aveda.

6. If you have a relaxer ( i have heard that Mizani and Affirm are the best relaxers) don't continue to relaxer all your hair everytime you go to the salon..just the new growth and try to stretch relaxers as long as possible.

7. You do not need to trim your hair everytime you go to the salon maybe every 3 to 6 months.

8. Wrap your hair in a satin or silk scarf to prevent damage before you go to bed.

9. Eat healthy, drink lots of water,

10 take multivitamins, and fish oil pills you can get from GNC.

Follow these steps and life will be good..the best part about flat iron (which i do once a week or every two weeks not everday since it will kill your hair) is that it is not stringy but thick and healthy, yet straight and light enough to blow in the wind. However any time i want to wear it all natural, i can just wash it and not wait 3 years to grow it out like having a relaxer to wear it natural.

I know this situation may seem bad now, but trust me, it's a blessing in disguise. There are so many women that have to cut their hair off and start over and they end up falling in love with their hair. I'll give you a couple of websites that really helped/still help me in my natural journey.
